What Version of SQL Server, and Why?
Once again, I’ve found myself in a debate with a friend about the versions of SQL Server both in use and talked about. It’s a bit odd, actually, to be still talking about SQL Server 2005, let alone 2000 (or even before that) for production systems.
I wanted to ask – what versions do you use and support and are you moving actively to 2008 (r2)? If so, great. Has it worked out like you planned in the transition process? If not, why not? I don’t mean this as an ad for "upgrade your systems now!" but rather a real point of curiosity. It’s weird how 2000 and 2005 seem to be watershed releases, and yet there are real benefits in 2008 that people go without just to keep from going through the upgrade process.
Yes, there are costs, I get it. But there seems to be a mental switch at each of these levels that is driving decisions. The architecture seems to get in the way moving from 2000, then the decisions about which version to move to happen with 2005/8. Still, it seems reasonable that you would want to be on the most current release for security, updates, performance and the like.
So here’s the question…
1. What version(s) of SQL Server are you using and supporting? If multiples, what are they, but what is your primary release target?
2. What was your primary criteria for selecting your version platform version of choice?
3. Have you seen the benefits you expected in your platform version of choice?
4. What are your timelines for moving to 2008 R2?
