Do You See MIPS-based Billing Returning?
I’ve been watching, admittedly with great recognition of the irony, the new trending toward billing based on CPU cycles. You see this in many cloud implementations, where you’re charged for actual usage of SQL Server (for example) by keeping track of cycles used for your application.

I think it’s pretty ironic because this is where I started back in the mainframe days – where nothing but dumb-terminals existed. We would bill departments based on their usage for generating reports, processing transactions or whatever the systems were doing for their department.

My question for you is whether you see this, either now or in the fairly near future, for your company? Do you see billing departments (or users) for their usage of your systems? Is this going to be more prevalent if you move to a cloud-based solution where YOU are being billed that way and want to pass along the bill for your users?

Send me a note – I can see the pros and the cons on this one… what do you think?
