Data Protection and Recovery Options with SQL Server

On The Show Today…
I caught some interesting things about Oracle moving into the gaming space – specifically looking to do really large database implementations to do with gaming environments. This brings some interesting possibilities to data mining and, aside from the "big brother" side of things, it could be really intriguing to combine the whole "offline" and "online" profile space.

There are a lot of people that think that building out more experiences in online "places" like Second Life and others is the next major direction and step for online learning, online collaboration and the like. If that’s indeed the case, then data mining across your "lives" will be very helpful and is only a matter of time. Imagine if you could combine information presented to your customers, your clients, your friends based on their entire life – online and offline – based on profiling and such you could do.

I’m guessing you’re either very FOR it or very AGAINST it.

Makes me a bit nervous, I must admit, because the only way this information really gets interesting is when it’s really "personally identifiable," making it possible to tie to a person and help form their world – commercially, personally, how you present it, etc. I’m not a big "fight for all kinds of privacy" person, but even I could see where this could be really nasty and just a bit too much.

I also don’t think it’s avoidable.

Really not a lot to do about this today – other than thinking about a couple of things. First, what could you do with more information about the people you serve? It could be really substantial and meaningful.

Second, what kinds of protections, going forward, do we need to start thinking about now – protections of information, protections of what’s presented, customization options and the like.

Just some food for thought. What do you think? Am I all wet?
