Finish the Job
Apparently many people have been through the experience of just not getting the job quite all the way done.

I received a whole slew of emails that essentially said nearly the same thing. It seems that the pressures of the times have forced many of you to get a job to a specific point in time, get it functional, then move on to the next urgent project, leaving the initial project unfinished at best, marginally functional at worst.

Add to this that consultants also chimed in – here’s an example – "Another trend that I’m noticing is database professionals not “owning” their effort, whatever it may be. I’m not sure what this is stemming from, but with what I’ve seen, there are a lot of half-done things out there. It frustrates management to no end when a consultant comes in and points out this out. As a consultant, I’m more than happy to finish the job… but it comes at a cost to the credibility of database professionals everywhere. I’d encourage all of you out there to bring your game to the next level and finish off that project, put in some unpaid time, nights, weekends, whatever. The alternative is seeing my smiling face."

It’s a good point. I think we have a responsibility to really push to get things fully completed as needed. After all, when it later breaks, it won’t be a situation of "what do you mean the system won’t be back online for awhile? I don’t remember you telling me we didn’t get everything in place – you blew it…"
