Billing for SQL Server Cycles…
Some great feedback on this topic – send in your thoughts here – and check it out:
Patrick writes – "I was at an Oracle 11g R2 conference last year in which one of the speakers basically said that Cloud computing is effectively a re-packaging of the MainFrame from the 60s & 70s
These billing practices are a reversion back to the same ridiculous billing practices that caused people to move away from a Mainframe.
We still have an IBM Z10 running some major systems and, while the technology is still better than anything offered by a Server farms, the pricing model is effectively killing any future development.
I would hope that Cloud computing does not fall into the same trap."
…and John writes "Yes! In fact – something I’m currently working on. I saw this email come across and thought DANG! Someone figured out how to do it! Now I can grab their scripts…
I support a shared environment – bunch of clusters – bunch of applications… Right now, I’ve scripted out data file allocation, and backup space usage so we can charge back on space utilization. Ultimately, we want to be able to see how much memory / cpu their application is taking up on the SQL Server… Just told management I’d look into the CPU and Memory thing… Haven’t looked into it yet, but my hopes is with 2008 I might be able to use some objects the governor uses? Like I said, haven’t looked into it yet. That’s next month."
A Very Different Free Web Seminar Event –
Working across platforms is challenging – but we’ll be looking at several areas that are of interest.
Five things every SQL Server DBA needs to know when managing multiple database platforms, that will be the subject of a web seminar on June 30th. While some DBAs work exclusively on SQL Server, you may have to support two or more types of database platforms today, and certainly multiple types of databases throughout the course of your career. During this lively conversation with real world examples, Scott Walz of Embarcadero and I will discuss the five things every SQL Server DBA needs to know when managing multiple database platforms. Sign up for this web seminar if you’re interested in learning how your SQL Server skills can be easily extended to additional database platforms such as Oracle, DB2, MySQL, or Sybase.
It’s free, I hope you’ll join us. Register here.
