Cloud Readiness… Where do things stand?
David
writes "So here’s my view:

With any new technology, we start to use it, figure out the features, strengths and weaknesses, work out solutions, and build useful systems. Therefore, changing from a technology that we’ve worked with for a long time, to something new, is always painful and usually feels like a step backward at first.

When looking at Azure or Amazon or etc., I’m always going to look at them first through the filter of everything we’ve learned running our own SQL Servers, and all the problems that we addressed and solved, and they will always come up short on first glance. Our current system depends on 3rd party DLLs that we call from within SQL… how will Azure or Amazon support that? We depend on scheduled jobs. We do tricky things with nightly shell scripts to copy database backups around, etc. etc.

All of these are solutions to problems… kludges perhaps, but solutions. If we were to move to something new, we’d first have to find solutions to those problems, and whenever I look into the cloud solutions I focus on the known holes, not the unknown future benefits.

If we were starting fresh with cloud databases we wouldn’t know what we were missing, and would learn over time how to exist in their world. But migrating is hard."

Good points, and good feedback. Have a great weekend everyone – and thanks for all the feedback on the survey. We’ll post winners on Monday!
